Brown Backs Broadband for All, so Will We See a Cash Injection?

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown has lent his full backing to plans for “broadband for all” by 2012. Speaking at today’s Digital Britain summit in London, he suggested that significant improvements in Britain’s broadband access are “integral to the success of Britain’s economy”.

As a keynote speaker at the summit, addressing key players from the technology and communications industries as well as the media, Gordon Brown underlined the connection between a fully Digital Britain and economic success. “I do think that the digital revolution lies at the heart of success for Britain in the years to come,” Brown said. “Achieving that goal of universal connectivity to broadband will be a critical stepping stone to a digital Britain.”

Also speaking at the summit, trade secretary Lord Mandelson even went on to suggest that some government investment would be necessary. His speech suggested that “pump priming” financial intervention is being considered to ensure that broadband is available to every household in the UK. “The market unaided will provide some of the next-generation infrastructure the UK needs but government cannot be indifferent to the wider national needs,” Mandelson said.

All of which suggests that some investment will be forthcoming to the broadband industry (click here for mobile broadband with free laptop) - which would include mobile broadband suppliers who may also be tasked with helping to provide full UK broadband access; although at present this is still being described as a “possibility rather than a certainty
