Supermarket Giant Chooses to Manufacture Clothing Responsibly

The revelation that Tesco have cooperated with a moral fashion label to form a line of online clothing may raise a few eyebrows. So, maybe, might the indisputable fact that the collection just 6 pieces is made of end of line Tesco stock which would otherwise finish up in dump, and is being produced in one of the most environmentally-friendly factories in the world.

The concept came from the superstore giant after a trip to From Somewhere’s collection at Estethica, the London fashion week moral fashion showcase. Tesco’s plan is to reuse waste inside its own supply chain while still keeping its fashion certifications. The garments are being produced in a “green” factory in Sri Lanka the first one in the world to be awarded a gold rating for environmental responsiblity by LEED, the world green building ratification system. “The actually exciting thing about the From Somewhere to FF range is that it is not just superb for the environment it’s great fashion, too,” Jan Marchant, the purchasing director for Tesco Clothing, asserted.

But while the advantages for Tesco are clear associating themselves with a dedication to environmental responsibility and recycling why would one of the UK’s most respected moral fashion labels agree to team up with a worldwide giant not often known a light carbon footprint? The From Somewhere and Estethica founder and designer, Orsola de Castro, asserted she took the view that reclaiming and “upcycling” fabric should be made more accessible, and that any effort by gigantic outlets to take accountability for their waste should be encouraged. “I have always thought in infiltration,” she announced. “We put Estethica right at the center of London fashion week 4 years back, this was unthinkable.

“Making the world’s second-biggest garments manufacturer start to take a look at their own rubbish is the same. It is wierd, but it’ll become part of normal. “Of course, right now this minute it is more of a selling excercise, but at least it is a greenwash at thirty degrees it’ll take a very long time to make the industry take responsibility and actually improve.” The collection itself is true to From Somewhere’s signature look, with body-con shapes and bright colors that may appeal to the teen and twentysomething market. The prices, which begin at £16, are interesting too. Current months have been difficult for moral fashion, with Ascension ( previously Adili ) compelled to postpone shares and afterwards being sold to a speculator for a token £1.
